What is the Emsella Chair?

While many people might think that incontinence is a women's health issue, men can experience urinary leakage, too. At Optima Medical Spa in Los Angeles, CA, we have the BTL EMSELLA Chair for patients who have urinary incontinence issues, like leakage, inability to get to the bathroom on time, difficulties holding urine, and more. Our board-certified physician, Dr. Abraham (Avi) Ishaaya, can offer a noninvasive solution with the FDA-cleared EMSELLA Chair for urinary incontinence. Many women over the age of 30 (especially women who have had a baby) experience some form of urinary incontinence. Men are not off the hook, however. Men can have incontinence issues, but they are far less reported to the doctor for treatment. We treat both men and women with urinary incontinence.

The EMSELLA Chair is a noninvasive way to control the bladder and strengthen the pelvic floor with electromagnetic stimulation. By evenly stimulating the muscles in the pelvic floor, the EMSELLA Chair can build neuromuscular stability to decrease episodes of urinary incontinence. If you would like to learn more about the EMSELLA Chair, please call and talk to one of our friendly patient coordinators at Optima Medical Spa. We would be happy to assist you.

AM I A CANDIDATE For Treatments with EMSELLA?

You are not a candidate for the EMSELLA Chair if you have a bleeding disorder, are pregnant, or have any surgical implants in your body (like an intrauterine device or IUD, a pacemaker, or any other electronic or metal implant). You may be an excellent candidate for EMSELLA Chair treatments for incontinence if you experience:

  • An inability to stop urinary leakage
  • Urinate when you laugh, cough, or sneeze forcefully
  • Find it difficult to get to the bathroom on time
  • Have to urinate immediately once the sensation alerts you
  • Frequent bathroom breaks during the day to avoid accidents
  • More often than not, urinary accidents happen

If you are experiencing these types of issues, we invite you to call Optima Medical Spa for a consultation for the Emsella Chair.

Your Emsella Treatments

You will sit in our treatment room on the EMSELLA Chair in your own clothing. No paper gown required. If you work near our office, your EMSELLA Chair treatment would be a fast lunch hour appointment as it takes about a half-hour per session. As you sit on the EMSELLA Chair, you will feel a flutter-like sensation while the technology contracts your pelvic floor more than 11,000 times. Once the treatment is over, you can go back to normal activities. There will be no restrictions on your activities after an EMSELLA Chair session. This therapy is so gentle and easy to endure that many of our patients read or just relax as time passes.

What Should I Expect Following EMSELLA Treatments?

The number of treatments you will need with the EMSELLA Chair will be up to Dr. Ishaaya. Most of our patients need six sessions. We schedule appointments for the EMSELLA Chair once or twice a week over a period of 2 – 3 weeks. With consistent treatment, you should feel improvement after one or two sessions. The strength of your pelvic floor should increase as you continue with EMSELLA Chair sessions. If you start to feel the incontinence resurface, you can also have maintenance sessions to build up your pelvic floor again.

As you recuperate, there are other changes you can make to assist in decreasing your incidents of incontinence. You may want to change your diet to limit or eliminate foods that are natural diuretics, cut back on the number of caffeinated beverages, schedule regular bathroom breaks, and ask your doctor if any of your medications are contributing to your incontinence issues. We are always here to help educate you on ways to decrease the impact incontinence has on your life.

Emsella FAQs

Why haven't Kegel exercises strengthened my pelvic floor? How do I know the EMSELLA Chair will?
Kegel exercises are wonderful for your pelvic floor, whether you are a man or a woman. We encourage you to continue to exercise your pelvic floor with Kegels. However, the EMSELLA Chair can do the work faster. During your 30-minute session, the technology can contract your pelvic floor muscles 11,000 times. You will see faster and easier results with assistance from the EMSELLA Chair.

Why do I leak urine when I workout?
It is very common for women and men to experience some leakage when putting pressure on the pelvic floor during the exercise. Lifting weights, jumping rope, and some explosive plyometric movements can be too much for a weak pelvic floor. When you exercise, your muscles exert maximum force — and sometimes, it pressures your pelvic floor and urine leaks out. By strengthening your pelvic floor muscles, you can stop those leaks from happening.

Why do I have incontinence now after I had a baby?
Carrying and delivering a baby puts extreme pressure on the pelvic floor. You are not alone. Many women who have had a baby say they immediately experienced incontinence after birth. The solution is to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles with EMSELLA Chair and be able to stop urinary leaks on your own.

How long does it take to see results from EMSELLA?
A significant number of patients notice slight improvements after their first session, but it will likely take a while until the final results can be achieved. Generally, patients will see considerable improvements 3 – 4 weeks following the first session in Los Angeles, CA. During your treatment weeks, your muscles should slowly gain strength until you have reattained control of your bladder.

How long do results from EMSELLA last?
In general, results from six EMSELLA sessions are expected to last approximately 6 – 12 months. However, these results may vary from patient to patient and possibly be maintained with at-home pelvic floor exercises. If urinary incontinence symptoms return, it may be necessary to repeat the treatment.

How long is recovery following an EMSELLA treatment?
No recovery time is needed following any EMSELLA session at Optima Medical Spa. You can return to your normal activities immediately after an EMSELLA treatment.
